Provider Guidance

On June 17, 2009 new Interpretive Guidelines and F-Tag Revisions will become effective. A broad list of revisions regarding quality of life and appropriate “environment” are an outgrowth of the symposium “Creating Home in Nursing Home” cosponsored by CMS and the Pioneer Network. Grooming, dressing, dining, dignity, visitation and accommodation of needs have the most changes. Homelike environment, closet space, lighting, call systems and sanitary conditions have language that addresses the need for improvements. CMS recognizes that changes will be gradual for most Nursing Homes but emphasize that a “shift” toward these changes in facility improvement plans must be evident.

Click here to go the “Just for Members” section of the website to download the Survey & Certification Letter 09_31, an advance copy of F-Tag language changes, the interpretive guidelines and the CMS PowerPoint educational tool for Surveyor Training. You will need a login and password to access the “Just for Members” section.
